Whereas stochastic optimization models are widely applied in finance, they are less well known in the energy sector. The complexity of the stochastic approach combined with the challenging requirements for modeling power stations and, gas-, power- and emission trading portfolios result in large-scale models that are extraordinarily difficult to solve. Their size requires significant hardware resources if they are to be solved in reasonable time. This task can only be achieved by using advanced technology based on 3-tier architecture and parallel Cplex (www.ilog.com), which is the leading computational engine for mathematical optimization models.

Expertise

Decision Trees has developed Bit@Energy, a stochastic optimization system for long and short-term unit commitment and power trading optimization. This application is in production with major power generators in Europe and Central America. Benchmarking has proven that the operation of generation units as well as forward contracts optimized by Bit@Energy have yielded additional profits, over deterministic optimization, of at least 8% per year.
